Culture refers to
values, beliefs, artefacts, ways of behaving, and ways of communicating of a
given group of people. Also included in a culture are all that members of a social group have
produced and developed- their language, modes of thinking, art,
laws, and religion.
Culture is passed on
from one generation to the next through communication, not through genes. Thus,
culture does not refer to skin colour or eye shape- these are passed on through
genes not communication. Culture does refer to beliefs in a supreme being, to
attitudes towards success and happiness, and to values placed on friendship,
love, family, or money- these are transmitted not by genes but by
communication.
Culture
is passed from one generation to another through enculturation, a process by
which you learn the culture into which you are born (your native culture).
Parents, peer groups, schools, religious institutions, and government agencies
are the main teachers of culture.
A
different way of learning culture is through acculturation, the process by
which you learn the rules and norms of a culture different from you native
culture. Through acculturation, your original or native culture is modified
through direct contact with or exposure to a new and different culture. For example,
