[1] The Arab Institute for Human Rights
(AIHR) is an independent Arab Regional NGO founded in March 1989 at the
initiative of the Arab Organization for Human Rights, the Arab Lawyers Union,
and the Tunisian League for the Defence of Human Rights, with the coordination
and support of the UN Centre for Human Rights. In 1992, the Institute
was awarded the UNESCO’s International Prize for Human Rights Teaching.
[2] The AIHR
aims at raising awareness of civil, political, cultural, social and economic
human rights as proclaimed in the Universal Declaration for Human Rights and
the related international instruments. It equally aims at the
dissemination of the culture of human rights and democracy in the Arab region.

activities of the AIHR address the following institutions and target groups:
-NGO’s and civil society organisations.
- Media
-Education
institutions.
-The
executive, judiciary and legislative institutions.
-
National and governmental institutions.
-Some
particular human or social categories such as women, youth, children, refugees
and disabled persons.
[4] The AIHR has a Board of Directors that meets regularly each year and
composed of the members representing the founding organizations of the
Institute in addition to the UN organizations: UN Office of the High
Commissioner for Human rights, the UNESCO, the UNICEF and the UNDP. It also has
a Scientific Committee composed of a plethora of competent experts and
technicians in all fields relating to its area of specialty, and three Liaison
Offices in

Institutions for Human Rights in all over the Arab world such as the National
Centre for Human Rights in
[6] During 21 years of existence, the AIHR participated actively in the
development of the human rights movement and the human rights promotion and
protection instruments and mechanisms at the regional and the international
levels. It also contributed to the capacity building of thousand members and
leaders of the civil society organizations in the Arab region and to the
development of the scientific thinking and the pedagogical tools and methods in
the field of human rights education having as a key reference the universal
human rights concepts, principles and instruments.

it’s founding, the AIHR has worked closely alongside with both governmental and
non governmental institutions, as well as national, regional, and international
institutions alike. Representatives of the aforementioned institutions have all
congratulated the institute’s work as well as the many partnerships and
collaborations shared between them.

Institute for Human Rights was established to help provide an educational and
cultural tool that would reinforce the human rights movement and implement its
agenda through the dissemination of human rights culture and values. The
fundamental mission of the AIHR is the diffusion of the human rights culture throughout
Arab society so as to conform to the principles of the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights.
