Sustainable development can be defined as
“meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs.”
Sustainable development is the effective use of resources for economic development while preserving the environment and ecosystem so
that not only the needs of presents are fulfilled but also for the future
generations.
Human beings interacts both
with the social world and nature. Both, economic development and stable
environment are required for the continual improvement of lifestyle and living
standards. But until now, the development was human oriented and limited to
rich nations. The development was achieved by damaging the environment and over
exploitation of natural resources which were non renewable. That caused
instability of environment and crossed the threshold limit of environmental
damage.
Measures of Sustainable Development:
To achieve sustainable development, the following
measures needs to be taken.
Sustainable Technology: We need to develop
and promote technologies that are most efficient, eco friendly and use
locally available resources to meet the needs. These also include development
of renewable or alternate energy technologies and clean energy technologies
like Nuclear Energy.
Reduce-Reuse-Recycle Principle: The most important measure to achieve
sustainable development is the 3R principle. This principle advocates for the
use of minimum of resources, then using them as many times as possible before
discarding and finally recycling them to a lower grade product for general use.
Maintaining Carrying Capacity: The environment
and ecosystems can recover from the damage that is under the threshold limit. So we
need to assure that our actions are not damaging the environment.
